Ask the Author #2

Last month we heard from George A. O’Brien. Now it’s time to let Geoff Robberts talk about what got him, or should we say “them,” to publish Time of Ends.

It was “them” but as we noted in our Acknowledgements to TOE, one of us passed away after heart surgery. Sadly, my writing partner’s ill health and weakened system couldn’t take the stress, sadly. So Geoff Robberts is a nom de plume, just a made-up name.

Wow, that is sad. Did he get to see the published book?

No, our draft was with our editor when he died. So it was left to me to clean it up, polish it, and get it through the Amazon Kindle process. I kept listening for his voice to coach me along. He never saw the final version and only drafts of the cover design. I convinced myself that I did him proud.

Did you make any significant changes suggested by your editor?

Yes, and we also decided to shorten the book by about 5,000 words. Unfortunately, that meant that one of his favorite scenes got tabled. I hope he realizes that it has been moved to the sequel that I just completed. He had a way of crafting interesting and somewhat outrageous actions by our characters.

What did your editor add to the process and quality of the book?

On top of the usual scrubbing, he convinced us the characters were too real life. Given that the story relies on the actions of vigilantes, he had us rename and rewrite descriptions to provide a bit of separation from those in the real world. Admittedly it was a lot of work, but he was right.

What’s this about a sequel?

Can we leave it as a mystery for now? My editor gets it in two weeks. Maybe we can talk more later.

OK, so for now, thanks, Geoff.
